[ADV] Sony α5000 Review
Courtesy of Sony Malaysia,
a few bloggers and I were given an opportunity to bring home the newly-launched
Sony α5000 for test shots. Read about our Bloggers Preview at Carcosa Seri
Negara here if you haven’t!
Now let’s start with the one thing that is
most important to us girls – selfies!
The Sony Alpha 5000 is light and compact and
thus is way more convenient for selfies. It's only 269g with battery and lens therefore is really easy to hold
with one hand.There’s even a 180 degrees
flip screen so you can frame yourself properly before taking the photo but as
I’m quite a pro at selfies I rarely needed to use it. Tee hee!
A selfie in
Portrait mode with low soft skin effect. Thanks to the NFC and WiFi feature, I can easily transfer the pics I
captured with the Sony Alpha 5000 to my smartphone using the Play Memories app
which is available free for both iPhone and Android, then upload them to
Facebook and Instagram! I don't need to use my phone's camera as long as the
Alpha 5000 is with me!
Here’s another selfie this time with
Stephanie Lim and using a higher level of Soft Skin effect. Just look at our
smooth complexions haha!
You can even take selfies in situations where
there isn’t much light. I took this one in a bar along Changkat Bukit Bintang
in Kuala Lumpur. I believe the good quality of the photo is due to the large
APS-C sensor which captures more light and detail and take photos up to 20.1 megapixels.
OK enough about selfies. Let’s move on to the
other modes.
The camera is pretty good in low light
conditions. Here’s a pic of the Asahi tower we had in Changkat. This was using
the hand-held twilight mode.
Everyone likes taking pics of food these days
and the Sony Alpha 5000 reproduces the colours very beautifully and accurately!
Above is a shot of a high tea tray while below is a shot of my latte!
A shot of one of the plants in my garden. The
background defocus is more prominent when I switched to Macro mode.
Mum’s new pet – a big black bug she found at
the garden. Thought it would be fun to capture it with macro function (despite
it being all black and gross T_T).
Noticed how the camera captured every strand of its hair on the legs?
The details were quite clear! I could even zoom in and see its eyes staring
cluelessly.
That night itself after the Bloggers Preview
I went to Heli Lounge at Menara KH to test out the camera. Small and light
weighted yet able to produce exquisite images. Sony α5000 is
definitely the kind of camera I would love to carry to events and outings!
Superior Auto - beautifully shoots automatically while reducing blurring
and noise. Love how the camera focuses on the subject which was the cocktails.
The KL tower captured under Night Scene mode which shoots night scenes clearly.
The clouds and buildings were captured so clearly even under low light
conditions.
A photo of the Twin Towers KLCC using the Night Scene mode. Pity it was
partially blocked by Tower 3.
The KL skyline from the Helipad Lounge with the two or should I say
three prominent towers captured with Sweep Panorama.
On a separate day, I brought along the camera to Publika and tried out
the Landscape function which shoots scenery in sharp focus with vivid colours.
Captured this magnificent scenic picture of the mosque with cotton candy clouds
above.
Another photo later in the evening as darkness approached.
There is a Movie function too which allows you to check the angle of
view before shooting. I have yet to discover more about that as there weren’t
any interesting events to try out the video mode.
Now here’s
what the Sony Alpha 5000 can do in the hands of a professional.
A view of
the KL skyline shot by MHB’s official photographer Andy Kho from his condo
using “Sunset” mode.
There’s so much you could do with Sony Alpha 5000! It is so incredibly
light yet produces DSLR quality photos with its large APS-C sensor! This pretty
camera is certainly at the top of my shopping list now that I’ve discovered its
amazing ability! ^^
The Sony Alpha 5000 will be available in Malaysia

[ADV] Sony α5000 Bloggers Tea Gathering @ Carcosa Seri Negara
On 15th
February 2014, I had the honour to witness the launch of Sony α5000 during the
bloggers tea gathering organized by Sony Malaysia at Carcosa Seri Negara.
Courtesy of
Sony Malaysia, each of us were given the opportunity to test the brand new Sony
α5000 for 2 weeks! The camera comes in 3 colours – pink, white and black.
Needless to say, I chose a unit in my favourite colour - pink!
The tea party
venue was filled with beautiful flowers and delicate desserts. Everything was
so pretty I couldn’t bear to eat them.
The event
started with the product briefing by the Sony product manager highlighting the
features of the camera which includes the large APS-C sensor which is 13x
bigger than normal compact camera sensors and even bigger than micro 4/3
sensors. This allows the camera to capture images in higher detail.
We were then
given a slideshow presention by Photoriders – a group of cyclists and
photographers from Penang who travel around on their bicycles. Instead of using
a DSLR, they opted for Sony α5000 on their travels.
Why? Well the
Sony α5000 comes with light, compact body weighing in at only 269g with the
battery and memory stick, making it the world‘s
lightest interchangeable-lens digital camera equipped with an APS-C sensor as
of January 2014.
It's
also equipped with a handy pop-up tiltable flash means you can bounce the flash off a
nearby wall or low ceiling instead of using direct flash which can be rather
harsh sometimes.
It is also
compatible with E-mount lenses, and has ISO sensitivity is up to ISO16000. All
the amazing functions and the fact that it's so light and portable made Sony
α5000 a much better choice compared to DSLR, or better known as BBBB – Bulky
Big Black Brick which the Photoriders call it ha ha! XD
There’s no
denying the capability of the Sony α5000. All the photos presented by
Photoriders during the talk were stunningly beautiful.
After the
presentation, introduction speeches and demonstration on the camera features,
it was time for the highlight of the event – photography contest! We were given
an hour to shoot anything in the hall and submit our best shot within the given
time frame. The winner would be the first official owner of Sony α5000!!!
We didn’t
waste any time putting the awesome Sony α5000 to the test!
Kelly is
always very serious when it comes to food!
Careen was
clearly enjoying herself!
Steph and I
were busy shooting selfies which are really convenient with Sony α5000’s
comfortable grip and 180 degree tiltable LCD screen. Moreover there’s even Soft
Skin Effect function to achieve beautiful skin!
The photos we
submitted were judged based on 3 criterions – photo quality, background defocus
and creativity. Well I tried, but being an amateur camera user I wasn’t looking
forward to be the winner.
One special
feature of the camera is no doubt its NFC and WiFi for One-touch sharing/remote
control with smartphones and tablets. I get to share my photos wirelessly on my
mobile through a few simple steps with the aid of PlayMemories app!
1. Install PlayMemories
Camera Apps
2. Select the
Wireless function on the camera’s menu

3. Connect my
smartphone’s Wi-Fi to the name shown
4. Go to PlayMemories App
and it will show that my camera and smartphones are now
5. The
photo(s) will be automatically copied to PlayMemories album in my gallery!
At last, after
a long discussion, the judges had finally come to a decision! The winning shot
that was picked:
The first
owner of Sony α5000 is none other than Careen Tan from Malaysia’s Hottest
Bloggers! So happy and excited for her!!!
Group photo
with fellow MHB members at the end of the gathering.
Look out for my review on the Sony Alpha 5000 which will be coming soon!
The
Sony Alpha 5000 will be available in Malaysia from 21 February 2014 onwards
